Fleas are a pain any time of the year, but just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that pests like fleas die off. They can ruin your winter coziness, jumping around and biting at your ankles, so it’s best to invest in pest management to keep them at bay this winter. We spoke to Empire Pest Control, who gave us valuable tips. Although they’re based in London, pest problems are the same worldwide.
Preventing Flea Infestations in Winter
Even though flea infestations are less common in winter, they can still be problematic. Central heating creates a warm environment where fleas can survive and thrive. Many pet owners skip flea treatments during colder months, assuming they aren't necessary—but this can lead to issues.
How to Keep Fleas Away in Winter:
Year-Round Flea Treatment
- Continue treating pets for fleas every month, even in winter.
- Preventative treatments stop infestations before they start.
- Consult your vet for the best flea control products for your pet.
Wash Your Pet's Beddings Frequently
- Use a hot wash to kill fleas and their eggs.
- Wash your pets bedding regularly to prevent fleas from settling in.
- Combine washing with regular flea treatments for the best results.
Dealing with a Winter Flea Infestation
Taking immediate action is crucial if you're facing a flea infestation this winter. Fleas thrive in dark, hidden areas and can quickly spread throughout your home.
Steps to Get Rid of Fleas:
Thorough Cleaning
- Vacuum under beds, furniture, and other dark areas where fleas hide.
- Dispose of vacuum bags or empty canisters immediately to prevent reinfestation.
- Wash pet bedding, blankets, and soft furnishings in hot water.
Prevent Future Infestations
- Regular flea prevention is easier than dealing with an infestation.
- Treat pets consistently with vet-recommended flea control products.
- Keep up with cleaning routines to eliminate flea eggs and larvae.
Call Professional Pest Control If Needed
- If fleas persist despite your efforts, professional treatment may be necessary.
- Experts have the tools and expertise to entirely eliminate fleas from your home.
Fleas can be just as problematic in winter as they are in summer. If you've fallen behind on prevention, now is the time to get back on track.

Yet another argument for keeping cats indoors, too.
ReplyDeleteI like the first picture. So nice to relax with a hot drink in winter. But over here it is getting hot without the rain!
ReplyDeleteLOL. Most other people are still having winter, but I'm in full-blown summer. (Thank you, Florida.) This right here is one of the reason we don't have pets. Oh, and because we have kids instead. ;)

I'm so glad my dog only hangs in the backyard! I remember out pets having fleas as kids and it was the WORST!
ReplyDeleteWe are in summer so we don't have the flea problem as yet. But we seldom have it anyway as we live in a tropical country.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I can only imagine what a pain it must be to get rid of them! There are so many things you have to keep in mind when adding a pet to the family, that's for sure. Although, I'd imagine the positives outweigh the negatives! haha :) Happy Valentine's Day!

Fleas are pesky, that's for certain. We try diligently to keep them off our pets.
